Brazing a Steel Part for the Aerospace Industry

Objective: To heat a steel part for a brazing application; the client is manufacturing steel cable for the aerospace industry.

Frequency: 204 kHz

Equipment:
  • Ambrell EASYHEAT™ 2.4 kW, 150-400 kHz solid state induction power supply with a workhead;
  • A coil specifically designed for this application.

Material: Steel parts

Temperature: 1400 °F (760 °C)

Process:

A custom-designed multiple-turn helical coil was built to generate the required heating for the application. Temperature indicating paint was then applied to the part, which dissolves when the part reaches temperature. It took about 50 seconds to heat the part to temperature. The client was updating their induction system and this meets their time objectives.

Benefits:
  • Speed: Induction met the client’s time requirements and is generally faster than other heating methods;
  • Repeatablility: The client can expect the same result in the same amount of time every single time with induction heating;
  • Work Environment: With induction there is no open flame and with induction’s instant on/off capabilities, it introduces less heat into the work environment than a method like torch heating would.
