What parameters are the most important for storing energy?

In terms of energy storage, two parameters are the most crucial: energy density and power density. Energy density describes the quantity of energy that can be stored in a given density. Power density is a method of how the energy can be stored in the device. The higher the value the shorter changing and discharging time. A perfect device for storing energy should connect these two parameters so they have the same values. In practice, this compromise is hard to achieve. 

What is a supercapacitor?

Today, LS Mtron supercapacitors offer a solution for this issue. They’re a compromise between batteries and conventional capacitors. They enable using new energy storing solutions, even considering that the density is still smaller than in conventional batteries.

A disadvantage of this technology can also be low voltage of a single element. It hesitate from 2,5 to 3V depending on a used electrolyte. To gain higher voltage, supercapacitors are connected in series into modules (with voltage up to 750 V). In traction vehicles, these devices are used for reducing energy waste through restoring and storing it during breaking. Stored energy is then used while moving or rapid accelerating.

Supercapacitors are characterised by high durability. Suppliers describe it in years (about 10 - 20) or in number of charging-discharging cycles (1 milion). It is easy to notice it’s an at least satisfactory durability, which in comparison to traditional batteries, is impressive. Another important trait is a wide range of work temperatures from -40 to 65°C. These devices, as opposed to traditional batteries, do not have in their enclosures toxic for the environment elements. A disadvantage of this technology is the price, which is higher than conventional capacitors or batteries.
