What Are Medium Voltage Current Transformers and Converters? How Do They Work?
These are devices that allow measuring large current values with meters that have smaller measurement ranges. In power engineering, it is often necessary to know the values of supply voltages and currents flowing in powered circuits, which is why medium voltage current transformers can be useful and enable the measurement of large currents and voltages using meters with smaller measurement ranges. Thanks to galvanic isolation of the measurement circuit from the main high voltage path provided by the transformers (often also called measurement transformers), the entire process is carried out safely.
In the case of control measurements of electrical quantities in circuits, meters for quantities such as voltage, current, resistance, or power are directly connected to the circuit. For measuring other quantities, such as temperature or rotational speed, the meter must be equipped with a converter so that the measured quantity can be presented in appropriate units.
