Photoelectric sensors can be used in various areas of industrial automation.
A photoelectric sensor operates by measuring the intensity of a light beam emitted by a transmitter, falling on a photosensitive element of the receiver. They are equipped with a light source emitter and its receiver. Interruption of the light beam triggers the sensor. Optical sensors are used both in advanced automation and in simple applications. They can also be used in home automation.
Depending on the intended use of the photoelectric sensor, different types of light are used and the beam is modulated. Infrared light, invisible to the human eye, is most commonly used.
Many photoelectric sensors are equipped with LEDs indicating their operational status, including proper cooperation between the transmitter and receiver. Observing these LEDs and their colors facilitates proper sensor installation and determining the output status or correctness of the response to an object, which is especially important when sensitivity is adjustable.
Application of the photoelectric sensor
The most common application of a photoelectric sensor is detecting the presence of a foreign object in a certain working area. In such a system, the sensor is associated with a light source that acts as the transmitter. If any object is placed in the optical path between the transmitter and receiver, a change in light intensity is detected. Depending on the design of the optical path, the light beam is interrupted, reflected, or scattered.
A common solution is to use synchronous diodes operating in the infrared as transmitters, making the output signal largely independent of external lighting, since visible light is easily filtered out.
In harsh conditions, reflective sensors or light barriers operating with red light emitted by an LED are used because such a light beam and its target point are easy to detect.
