Semiconductors – what are they?
Semiconductors are materials that can conduct electric current or act as an insulator, depending on external conditions and room temperature. The offers include, among others, diodes, transistors, thyristors, insulated modules, and controllers, used in electronic circuits and power electronics. Their operation is based on the movement of electrons and holes in the crystal structure. In intrinsic semiconductors, such as silicon (Si) or germanium (Ge), charge carriers occur naturally, while in doped semiconductors – by adding dopant atoms (e.g., boron, phosphorus, gallium arsenide – GaAs).
This is how n-type or p-type semiconductors are created, in which the appropriate dopant atom changes the concentration of free electrons and positive charges. Thanks to this, semiconductors can conduct electric current in a controlled manner. Phenomena occurring in them, such as the transition of electrons from the valence band to the conduction band, determine their electrical characteristics.
