Applications of LEM current and voltage transducers

The main purpose of using LEM electrical transducers is to obtain an analog or digital low-voltage signal isolated from the primary side, reflecting the instantaneous (waveform) or effective electrical measured value with sufficient accuracy in a given frequency band. This signal can be read or recorded on a meter or monitor, as well as processed to control electrical systems in any processes and devices such as: converters and inverters, speed controllers for DC and AC electric motors, robots and automata, buffer and uninterruptible power supplies, electric welders, traction drives, electric and traction substations.

Electrical transducers from LEM

Electrical transducers transform the primary current into a galvanically isolated signal proportional to the instantaneous or effective value of this current in a wide frequency range from 0 to 800 kHz.

They are used to measure direct and alternating currents up to 20 kA (for industrial and electric traction applications) and very large currents in galvanic processes up to 500 kA and voltages up to 6400V RMS.

Basic parameters required for transducer selection:

  • Measured values and their ranges.
  • Supply voltage Vc: e.g. 0±12V, 0±15V, 0±24V, +5V, +12V, +24V.
  • Frequency range: e.g. 0-50kHz, 0-200kHz, 0-5kHz, 10Hz-6kHz.
  • Operating temperature range: e.g. -10...+70°C, -40...+85°C.
  • Operating voltage, test insulation voltage up to 18.5kV 50 Hz 1 min.
  • Mounting method: PCB mount, standalone modules, window dimensions.
  • Connector type: e.g. metric terminal (M4, M5), Fast-on, Molex, cable.
  • Output signal: e.g. voltage 0-4V, 0-10V, analog current 25-1000mA, compatible with PLC controllers 4-20mA, 0-10V.
  • Measurement accuracy: inherent, total system accuracy.
  • Standards e.g. EN50178, EMC (89/336/EEC), traction EN50155.
  • Electromagnetic compatibility CE.
  • 5-year warranty.

What is the difference between current and voltage transducers?

Current transducers are designed to measure the flow of current in electrical circuits and convert it into a voltage or digital signal. In terms of their operation, current transducers include:

CTs, known as transformers, which are used to convert current, typically in high-voltage systems, into smaller proportional flows that can be measured using standard equipment.

Hall effect transducers, which rely on the Hall effect phenomenon to measure direct or alternating current in circuits. These types of electrical transducers are based on measuring the magnetic field generated by the flowing current.

Voltage transducers are designed to convert the voltage present in a circuit into a signal corresponding to its value. Their basic classification includes:

- DC voltage transducers designed for circuits with direct current,

- AC voltage transducers intended for circuits with alternating current.

Both types of transducers (voltage and current) provide the ability to monitor parameters in electrical installations, protect against overloads, and enable proper machine control.

Basic parameters of electrical transducers

An electrical transducer may have different technical properties, and therefore different application ranges. One of its most important parameters is the measuring range, which defines the maximum and minimum current that can be measured. A current transducer may have a measuring range from 1 ampere up to several thousand amperes, while a voltage transducer — from several to tens of thousands of volts.

Another important parameter of electrical transducers is accuracy, referring to the precision of the measurements carried out by these components. It is expressed as a percentage, e.g., ±0.5%. The lower the value of this parameter, the more precise the measurements performed by the transducer.

Response time is also an important parameter. It indicates how quickly the electrical transducer can react to changes in voltage or current values. Response time is particularly important when a voltage or current transducer is used to monitor the state of a network.

In addition, electrical transducers also have output load parameters. This is the maximum load resistance that voltage transducers can handle, or the maximum current in the case of current transducers.

Where are current and voltage transducers used?

Electrical transducers are used in all industries where constant monitoring, measuring, or analyzing current in electrical circuits is essential. These include, among others:

- power engineering,

- industrial automation,

- railway transportation,

- renewable energy sources (RES),

- telecommunications,

- HVAC.

In DACPOL’s offer, you will find electrical transducers that meet the needs of each industry!
