What are safety switches?
Emergency stop switches allow the machine to be stopped during a failure or when the health and life of the employee are at risk. This is very important protective equipment. These devices do not prevent access to the hazard and do not detect access to the hazard, which means they should not be considered as primary protective devices and emergency stop switches should never replace primary protective devices.
What types of safety switches are there?
Mushroom switches usually have a red button in the shape of a mushroom, which is placed on a yellow background. These are devices that stop the operation of a machine. The operating principle of such a switch is as follows: when the button is pressed, it is locked in a certain position, which causes it to latch before the contacts are broken. It is important that manual stop buttons must be reset manually, but this action does not cause a hazardous situation.
Rope switches are used to stop machines. Rope switches, unlike mushroom buttons, can be operated from any place along the rope. These devices must detect both pulling and slackening of the rope. When the rope is grabbed and pulled in a random direction, the switch is activated and the power is cut off. The slack detection function allows verification of whether the rope has been broken, which serves as protection against system damage. Rope switches are used when it is not possible to install guards. This makes them suitable for securing equipment located over long distances, e.g., securing conveyor belts. When selecting a rope switch, attention should be paid to the length of the protected sections and the working conditions of the ropes. In the case of temperature changes, steel ropes may shrink or stretch, which may lead to emergency machine stoppage or rope breakage.
