What is a thermal relay?

Thermal relays are used for protecting power-electric engines, winding of transformers, or power-electronic components. During work, the engine can be overloaded because of mechanical overload e.g. cutting wet wood or power overload. A long increase in intake power can damage the engine because of overheating. In case of the disappearance of phase current or given value the device disconnects the control system. A thermal relay is a device protecting the engine from overload effects.

Construction of a thermal relay

A thermal bimetal relay is made from bimetals, which are heated with the current intaken by the engine and system of the splay joint. This joint starts working through the bending of bimetals because of the temperature increase. The bimetals have to be inserted into the main system of the engine while the joint into the control system of the relay.
