A thyristor is a controlled semiconductor device that switches from the blocking state to the conducting state after a short control pulse is applied to the gate.

Standard Lamina thyristors are suitable for building converters operating at the supply network frequency of 50Hz. Thyristors can be used to build controlled rectifiers, power controllers, and soft starters.
Types of thyristors from Lamina
Fast thyristors
Fast thyristors, also called pulse thyristors, are characterized by short turn-on times, high resistance to steep current rise rates, and short turn-off times. They are used in current inverters and voltage inverters, as well as in DC drive converters and induction heating.
Asymmetric thyristors
Asymmetric thyristors are characterized by low reverse voltage and a blocking voltage comparable to other types of thyristors. They are mainly used in traction converters for drive systems.
Thyristor protection
Thyristors require protection against short-circuit effects and commutation overvoltages. Only fast fuses specially designed for protecting diodes and thyristors may be used for short-circuit protection. RC snubbers, varistors, and special semiconductor elements connected between the gate and anode, e.g., BOD type, are used to protect thyristors from overvoltages.
