What is a capacitor?
A capacitor is an electronic component consisting of two conductors (plates) separated by a dielectric. Applying voltage to the capacitor plates causes the accumulation of electric charge. We offer aluminum electrolytic, mica, and film capacitors.
The basic parameters of capacitors are:
- Capacitance C [F] – The unit of capacitance is the Farad [F]; in practice, smaller units are used, such as mF (10-3 F), µF (10-6 F), nF (10-9 F), pF (10-12 F). Capacitance is specified with an acceptable tolerance.
- Rated voltage Un [V] – the maximum voltage that can continuously appear across the capacitor without changing its properties. Due to the wide variety of capacitor types, the rated voltage may be DC, AC of a certain frequency, or pulsed.
- Equivalent Series Resistance ESR [Ω] – represents the total losses in the capacitor, which, in addition to the series resistance of leads and electrodes Rs, include losses in the dielectric caused by the influence of an alternating electric field. ESR is a function of frequency and temperature.
- Equivalent Series Inductance ESL [H] – includes the inductance of the capacitor’s leads and electrodes.
- Rated current In [A] – the maximum RMS current that can flow through the capacitor continuously.
Depending on the type of dielectric, capacitors can be divided into the following groups:
- Aluminum electrolytic capacitor – in this type of capacitor, the dielectric consists of aluminum oxides with a thickness depending on the capacitor’s rated voltage. The leads of electrolytic capacitors are marked and should be connected to the DC power source with the positive electrode to the positive pole and the negative electrode to the negative pole. The main advantage of electrolytic capacitors is the ability to obtain very high capacitance in relation to their size, made possible by the large electrode surface area and the use of a thin dielectric. The capacitance range of our capacitors is from 33 µF to 220,000 µF, and the rated voltage from 10 V to 500 V. These capacitors are used in electronic devices. A special type of electrolytic capacitors is industrial application capacitors. These capacitors, thanks to the special construction of the electrodes, have low equivalent series resistance and impedance, allowing for high ripple currents. The rated capacitance range of these capacitors is from 100 µF to 1,500,000 µF, and the rated voltage from 10 V to 500 V. This type of capacitor is used in power electronic devices such as UPS systems, inverters, and switch-mode power supplies.
- Mica capacitor – has a structure similar to a ceramic capacitor, but due to a different manufacturing process, it may have silver electrodes. Mica capacitors are characterized by very high insulation resistance, low dissipation, and excellent parameter stability. The capacitance of the capacitors we offer ranges from 51 pF to 0.51 µF, and voltage from 250 V to 15 kV. Due to their properties, these capacitors are mainly used in high-frequency circuits.
- Film capacitor – this is a capacitor with a dielectric made from synthetic materials – most often polypropylene, metallized polypropylene, or polyester. Capacitors with a plastic dielectric are characterized by low dissipation, which results from the low resistance of the electrodes and high insulation resistance. These capacitors can achieve high currents (up to several thousand amperes) and rated voltages (up to several tens of thousands of volts), which allows their use in power electronics systems as commutation, damping, filtering capacitors, as well as in devices for reactive power compensation, induction heating generators, and high-voltage circuits.
