What is a Capacitor?

Capacitor is an electronic component consisting of two conductors (plates) separated by a dielectric. Applying voltage to the capacitor plates causes electric charge to accumulate on them. We have aluminum electrolytic, mica, and film capacitors.

The basic parameters of capacitors are:

  • Capacitance C [F] – The unit of capacitance is Farad [F]. In practice, smaller units are used, such as mF (10-3 F), µF (10-6 F), nF (10-9 F), pF (10-12 F). Capacitance is given with an allowable tolerance.
  • Rated voltage Un [V] – The maximum voltage that can appear on the capacitor continuously without changing its properties. Due to the wide variety of capacitor types, the rated voltage can be DC, AC at a specified frequency, or pulse voltage.
  • Equivalent series resistance ESR [Ω] – Represents the total losses in the capacitor, which besides the series resistance of leads and electrodes Rs, includes losses in the dielectric caused by interaction with a varying electric field. ESR is a function of frequency and temperature.
  • Equivalent series inductance ESL [H] – Includes the inductance of the leads and capacitor electrodes.
  • Rated current In [A] – The maximum RMS current that can flow through the capacitor continuously.

Depending on the type of dielectric, capacitors can be divided into the following groups:

  • Aluminum electrolytic capacitor – In this type of capacitor, the dielectric is aluminum oxide with thickness depending on the capacitor's rated voltage. Electrodes of electrolytic capacitors are marked and should be connected to a DC source with the positive electrode to the plus terminal and the negative electrode to the minus terminal. The main advantage of electrolytic capacitors is achieving very high capacitance relative to their size, possible due to the large surface area of the electrodes and the use of a thin dielectric. The capacitance range we offer is from 33 µF to 220,000 µF, and rated voltages from 10 V to 500 V. These capacitors are used in electronic devices. A special type is industrial electrolytic capacitors, which, thanks to the special construction of electrodes, have low series resistance and impedance, enabling large ripple currents. Their capacitance range is from 100 µF to 1,500,000 µF, with rated voltages from 10 V to 500 V. These capacitors are used in power electronic devices, e.g., UPS, inverters, and switch-mode power supplies.
  • Mica capacitor – Has a structure similar to a ceramic capacitor, but due to a different manufacturing process, it can have silver electrodes. Mica capacitors are characterized by very high insulation resistance, low loss, and high parameter stability. Offered capacitances range from 51 pF to 0.51 µF, with voltages from 250 V to 15 kV. Due to their properties, they are mainly used in high-frequency circuits.
  • Film capacitor – This is a capacitor with a dielectric made of plastic materials, most often polypropylene, metallized polypropylene, or polyester. Plastic dielectric capacitors are characterized by low loss, resulting from low electrode resistance and high insulation resistance. These capacitors can handle large currents (up to several thousand Amperes) and high rated voltages (up to tens of thousands of volts), making them suitable for power electronics as commutation, snubber, and filtering capacitors, as well as for reactive power compensation, induction heating generators, and high-voltage circuits.
