Reliable control in harsh conditions: Traction contactors and disconnectors
Traction contactors and disconnectors are key components of any system that requires reliable and safe current control in harsh conditions. Although both devices are used to connect and disconnect electrical circuits, their specific nature and application make them indispensable in the transport industry - from trams and trains, through battery-powered vehicles, to forklifts.
What are traction contactors?
Traction contactors are mechanical switches used to switch electrical circuits on and off under load. Their main feature is the ability to operate with high operating currents (up to several hundred amperes) and resistance to frequent switching. Traction contactors, in unlike ordinary contactors, are adapted to work in a very demanding environment, such as rail vehicles, where there are high vibrations and atmospheric conditions are variable.
Key applications and features:
- Control of traction motors: They are a basic element in the propulsion systems of trains, trams and metro.
- Overload protection: They can switch off overload currents, protecting motors and other components.
- High resistance: The structure is adapted to work in difficult conditions, taking into account shocks, dust and moisture.
- Arc extinguishing chambers: Equipped with special arc chambers that quickly and effectively extinguish the electric arc created during disconnection.
How are traction disconnectors different?
Traction disconnectors have a different, but equally important function. These are devices designed to create a visible, safe insulation break. Their main task is to isolate a given section of the circuit (e.g. a section of the traction network) from the power supply, which is necessary during maintenance or repair work. In contrast to contactors, disconnectors are not intended for frequent connection under load, although some models have the ability to switch off operating currents.
Key applications and features:
- Safe insulation break: They create a physical break in the circuit, which ensures that the disconnected section is completely safe to work on.
- Short-circuit resistance: Many traction disconnectors are designed to withstand high short-circuit currents for a short period.
- Manual or remote control: They can be controlled manually (e.g. from the level of a traction pole) or remotely using motor drives.
- Resistance to external conditions: They are usually installed outdoors and are resistant to extreme temperatures, moisture and UV radiation.
Choose the right solution for your installation
The choice of the right traction contactor or disconnector depends on the specific application. If you need a device for frequent switching of circuits under load, traction contactors will be the ideal solution. They ensure reliable operation in drive and control systems. If, on the other hand, the priority is safe isolation of a section for maintenance purposes, traction disconnectors will be necessary.
In our offer, you will find a wide selection of traction contactors and disconnectors that meet the highest quality and safety standards, adapted to the requirements of modern transport. Contact our experts to choose the best solution for your project.
