Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is the ability of a given device or system to work correctly in a given electromagnetic environment and not emit electromagnetic field disturbances that interfere with the correct operation of other devices. In other words, it is the resistance of a device to electromagnetic disturbances in its environment and the limitation of the introduction of disturbances into this field. By electromagnetic disturbance is meant any electromagnetic phenomenon that impairs the performance of a device (e.g. electromagnetic noise, an unwanted signal or a change in the propagation medium itself - propagation), and the EMC problem itself consists of:

- Immunity - the ability of a device to function properly without deterioration when an electromagnetic disturbance occurs.

- Susceptibility - is the response of an operating device or system to a specific electromagnetic disturbance or conventional disturbance signal.

- Robustness - is the ability of an operating device or system to retain its original characteristics after the effects of a specified electromagnetic disturbance or conventional disturbance signal have ceased.

The impact of electromagnetic fields on electrical and electronic equipment contributes to the induction of parasitic currents and voltages in circuits. This does not go unnoticed on the equipment, which may start to malfunction or become damaged. Examples of the effects of incompatibility:

- incorrect instrument or sensor indications resulting in improper operation of equipment, including failure of safety mechanisms to operate,

- interference with radio communications systems operating in the vicinity of the equipment,

- increased number of repairs and service costs,

- administrative penalties, including orders to withdraw equipment from the market,

- termination of the contract and/or damages (e.g. for the contractor's lost profits).

In the case of military applications, EMC is also about maintaining the secrecy of data transmission, which nowadays can easily be reconstructed from the recorded electromagnetic field radiated from the device.

As Dacpol, we offer support to our partners in the form of EMC training tailored to their individual needs. A typical agenda for such training includes a discussion of legal requirements (directives, standards, labelling), an introduction to field theory and signal processing, a presentation of EMC test methods (tests, typical problems) and a section on apparatus and circuit design, as the initial stage of PCB production is considered to be crucial in the topic of electromagnetic protection.

Training for the defence industry

In addition to basic training, we also organise training profiled in terms of a selected subject matter. One of the industries we serve is the military industry, which has its own specifics:

- Military Standards (MIL-STD),

- MIL-STD-461G (formerly 'F'),

- We test the system, not the EUT itself,

- Different test sites than civilian test sites,

- Much of DO-160 is moving to MIL-STD,

- Background measurement (6dB offset from limit),

- Change: Time Domain Receivers can be used.

Our training is based on the 2014/30/EU (EMC) and 2014/54/EU (RED) directives and is helpful for designers of various types of equipment: from power supplies and converters to telecommunications and communications systems to typically military apparatus such as radars or locating and fire control systems. In addition, we help to ensure trouble-free operation of equipment in confined spaces, such as in a combat vehicle, and to optimise the design process of electronic equipment at the concept stage.

In addition to this, we provide a service to assist companies designing Tempest-class devices that need to ensure the security of processed classified information in their products.

Support for designers

To meet customers' needs for assessing the interference levels of electrical circuits and electronic systems, DACPOL and the engineers at Langer EMV-Technik GmbH offer services related to the detection of weak points in digital circuits, as well as interference analysis. Our EMC emission and immunity measurement technology, as well as our chip test system, are mainly used during the product development phase and are applied in systems worldwide. Customised pre-compliance consultancy services help developers and designers quickly find solutions to complex EMC problems in the development of ICs, devices and modules.

As part of the services provided, it is possible to carry out tests on equipment entrusted to the customer. To prepare the analysis, it is necessary to:

- obtaining two working samples of the product,

- circuit documentation,

- a disassembled PCB and/or circuit design,

- an engineer from your company who is familiar with the design,

- records of previous measurements,

An example of components to be examined are connectors. EMC characteristics are highly dependent on their quality at the interfaces. The design of the connector determines the coupling characteristics of external interference to internal signals and the decoupling of internal signals. Using a coupling inductance measuring station, the coupling inductance of cables and connectors is determined. This parameter describes the EMC quality of the connectors or cables and allows prospects to be optimised during development.

The range of measurements is determined according to the customer's needs. We will design and manufacture the PCBs, carry out the measurements (with the customer's participation if required) and prepare a comprehensive test report. Seminars in the form of workshops

As part of promoting EMC knowledge, we also organise seminars in the form of workshops. These consist of a lecture-theoretical part and a parallel practical part. During these, participants learn methods for analysing and optimising the EMC characteristics of circuits and equipment. In addition, emphasis is placed on detecting and eliminating the causes of interference immunity problems during burst or ESD tests. With the help of numerous practical examples, participants learn about the various stages of interference suppression using EMC measuring instruments. By carrying out a large number of experiments independently with a mentor, participants are able to test their acquired knowledge and gain experience in dealing with measurement technology and troubleshooting techniques.
