Introduction

The GTEM cell is a waveguide TEM with an upper frequency limit extended to the GHz range.

It is being considered as an alternative measuring device for both radiated emission and immunity measurements.

It is included in the recently published standard IEC 61000-4-20 "Emission and immunity tests in transverse waveguides (TEM)".

 

Theory of operation

GTEM cells (Giga-hertz Transversal Electro-Magnetic cells) are waveguide structures designed for electromagnetic compatibility measurements and biomedical applications.

The electromagnetic field within the cell is distributed in TEM mode. In TEM propagation mode, there is no electric or magnetic field component in the direction of electromagnetic wave propagation.

Therefore, the field components are strictly perpendicular. Assuming ideal TEM field distribution below the cell cutoff frequency (before the introduction of higher-order modes), the electromagnetic field distribution can be considered static.
