Although an injection transformer is a very wideband device, it is not suitable for measuring the rejection ratio of a power supply or operational amplifier (PSRR). This is due to the DC transformer's intolerance. Even a small DC signal (<5mA) can significantly reduce the input voltage amplitude or even saturate its core. The J2120A circumvents these drawbacks.
The J2120A allows the input voltage to be modulated using the output signal from a circuit analyzer. This device must be able to transmit a signal with a frequency well below the mains frequency and well above the control loop bandwidth of the circuit under test.
The J2120A's output amplitude is controlled by the analyzer signal and the load capacitance. The 100-bode device is very selective, so any distortion at the J2120A output does not affect the measurements. However, it's important to remember that this is a small device, and the oscillator signal should remain as low as possible, taking into account interference. The recommended value is 50mVpp (-20dBm). In some cases, it may be necessary to attenuate the signal even further, so an additional attenuator can be ordered. Some circuit analyzers, such as the Bode 100, have the ability to modulate the signal amplitude as a function of its frequency, which makes it easier to optimize its level.
The J2120A can also be used to measure the input impedance of a power supply when used with a suitable current probe.
