What parameters are the most important for energy storage?

In matters concerning energy storage, two parameters are the most important: energy density and power density. Energy density defines the amount of energy that can be stored in a given volume. Power density, on the other hand, refers to how quickly that energy can be stored or released in the device. The higher the value, the shorter the charging and discharging time. An ideal energy storage device should combine these two parameters to have high values. In practice, achieving such a compromise is difficult.

What is a Supercapacitor?

Supercapacitors by LS Mtron today offer a solution to this problem. They are a compromise between batteries and conventional capacitors. They enable the use of new solutions in the field of energy storage, even considering that energy density is still lower than in conventional batteries.

A drawback of this technology can be the low operating voltage of a single element. It ranges between 2.5 and 3V depending on the electrolyte used. To achieve higher voltage, supercapacitors are connected in series in modules (with voltages reaching even up to 750 V). In traction vehicles, these devices serve to reduce energy losses by recovering and storing energy during braking. The stored energy is then used during starting or rapid acceleration.

A supercapacitor is characterized by a long lifespan. Manufacturers specify it in years (approx. 10 - 20 years) or in the number of charge-discharge cycles (1 million). As is easy to see, this durability is at least satisfactory, which compared to traditional batteries makes a strong impression. Another important feature is the wide operating temperature range, from -40 to 65°C. Unlike conventional batteries, these devices do not contain environmentally toxic components in their construction. A downside of this technology is its price, which exceeds that of conventional capacitors or batteries.

What are the applications of supercapacitors?

Applications of supercapacitors:

  • electric vehicles (trams, trolleybuses, hybrid cars, electric forklifts, etc.);
  • backup memory (UPSs, electronic devices, telecommunications, military industry);
  • power conditioning systems (DVR);
  • portable devices (laptops, mobile phones);
  • renewable energy sources (RES; wind turbines, photovoltaic cells, energy storage).
