Industrial Ethernet Serial Connection Servers /></div>
<div id=Functional Description

Industrial and commercial measurement and control systems often contain standalone devices with unused serial ports. B[&]B Electronics ESR serial connection servers enable connection of these ports to an existing LAN or WAN, providing access to more information and the ability to configure, manage, and repair these devices from a control room, office, or anywhere via a WAN. This saves time and eliminates the cost and hassle of having to transport a diagnostic laptop to remote, cold, dirty, and hard-to-reach device installation locations. ESR serial connection servers are built for industrial environments. They feature a slim, DIN-rail-mounted enclosure with IP30 protection. They operate on AC or DC power. They are equipped with power terminal blocks. They even support DC backup power.
A serial device connects to the ESR serial port, which in turn connects to a LAN. A computer connected to the network "sees" the device over the network as a virtual serial connection. ESR serial servers support TCP or UDP protocols and allow data transmission and reception from multiple IP addresses. There are four methods for configuring ESR serial servers: using Vlinx Management Software, a web server, a Telnet connection, or a direct RS-232 console connection using a terminal program. Operation

• A detailed user manual is provided on the CD included with the product.
• Vlinx™ Manager Software allows easy access to the serial server to configure the server and its ports, update the server's firmware, and monitor the status and operation of the ports. Once launched, Vlinx Manager searches for and displays all serial servers available on the network. The Port Monitor feature allows you to use any PC on the LAN/WAN to view data transfer status and proactively troubleshoot problems. This feature displays the established client-server connection and the client's IP address. It displays the number of bytes transmitted and received, as well as the status of the hardware handshake lines.
• ESR serial connection servers can be configured from any web browser (e.g., Internet Explorer) within the LAN/WAN. This allows remote management of the software and serial device. The server also enables remote troubleshooting.
• Vlinx Serial connection servers enable automatic resumption of a TCP connection in the event of a power failure or loss of Ethernet connection on either the client or server side. Once a test connection is established, the server sends a signal to the client every five seconds until the connection is reestablished. Without this feature, a device that has lost connection and stopped communicating would not be able to reconnect to the network without technical intervention. The test connection feature is available for virtual COM ports and TCP connections, directly to a given IP address.
