A shunt is a special resistor that allows the measurement of high current values. It is used for measuring both direct and alternating current (depending on the meter used). There are internal shunts – built into the meter for measuring small currents of a few to several dozen amperes, and external shunts – for measuring currents from several dozen amperes (15 A) up to several thousand amperes.

A shunt has four terminals: two (external) for connecting the current path and two (internal) for measuring the voltage drop. It works together with a millivoltmeter connected to the internal terminals, which measures the voltage drop across the shunt.
