Their main task is not only to ensure the effective distribution of electrical energy but, above all, to maintain order in the wiring and maximize the safety of use. They enable safe and precise connection of conductors powered from a single source, eliminating the need to connect several cables under one screw terminal, which is a potential source of failure.

Structure and Types of Distribution Blocks

A distribution block is a modular electrical accessory that consists of insulators, conductors (busbars), and terminals. They are most often mounted on a DIN rail (TH35) or on a mounting plate, which facilitates installation, servicing, and possible expansion. Depending on the needs and specifics of the installation, several types of blocks are distinguished:

  • Modular blocks – multi-pole, dedicated mainly for mounting on a DIN rail, ideal for expanded systems.
  • Compact blocks – most often single-pole, used for connecting conductors of different diameters.
  • Feed-through blocks – allowing the connection of copper and aluminum conductors in one place.

They are available in various configurations, e.g., 1-pole, 4-pole, or dedicated N + PE (neutral and protective) strips, which ensure a reliable and separate grounding connection.

Terminals: Screw vs. Spring (Push-in) Connections

The method of fastening conductors in distribution blocks and terminal strips is crucial for durability and speed of assembly. Two basic types of terminals are most commonly used:

  • Screw terminals (e.g., V-clamp type): They provide a high contact pressure, which translates into safety and low voltage drop. They require the tightening of a clamping screw, which ensures great connection durability. However, they are more time-consuming to install and require periodic checking for tightening, as the screw connection may loosen.
  • Spring terminals (e.g., Push-in): Considered a future-proof solution due to a significant reduction in working time (up to 60-80%). The spring presses the conductor with the same force throughout the entire operation, which makes them resistant to vibrations and the problem of loosening. In the case of Push-in technology, installation is very quick and does not require the use of specialized tools, which is an advantage in control cabinets and domestic switchgear.
