What is a Rogowski Coil?
The Rogowski coil, also called a Rogowski transducer or Rogowski belt, is a type of air coil used to measure alternating current in conductors without the need to cut them. It operates on the principle of inducing a voltage proportional to the current in the conductor, generating an output signal for further processing in measurement systems and current transformers. In electrical circuits, the Rogowski coil can work with an integrator or a measurement transducer such as Janitza Rogotrans, enabling precise current measurements depending on the model and configuration, in accordance with selected IEC standards.
Rogowski coils are available in various loop diameters, from 10 to 300 mm, allowing flexible installation around a conductor and integration with existing power systems and DIN rails. Unlike conventional current transformers, the Rogowski coil has no magnetic core and is used to measure alternating currents (AC). In special systems, with the use of an appropriate integrator, it is possible to indirectly monitor direct current. The voltage signal generated by the coil is proportional to the rate of change of current, allowing monitoring of both the fundamental component and harmonics in power distribution systems.
The Rogowski coil is used for precise measurements of primary currents and can cooperate with low-voltage current transformers, depending on system configuration, enabling integration with modernized power installations. These devices are resistant to high temperatures and vibrations, and their output voltage can be, for example, 0–1 V, with 24 V DC power supply, facilitating cooperation with measurement equipment and protection systems. Thanks to the use of a flexible coil and mounting brackets, installation is quick and safe, and the device can operate over a wide frequency range, depending on the model and configuration, with currents from a few to several thousand ARMS in selected versions.
Rogowski coils have widespread applications in electricity measurement, monitoring currents in power circuits, operation of remote-powered measuring instruments, and in the modernization of energy distribution systems, providing accurate measurements of current and voltage components in modern industrial installations.
