EMC/RFI/IP Protection Devices
What types of electromagnetic disturbances are there?
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and the electromagnetic environment affect connections between electrical and electronic systems, as well as the operation of components.
Main groups of issues:
- Conducted disturbances: result from voltage drops, surges, pulsations, and high-frequency currents in electrical systems.
- Device located near a radiation source: nearby devices generate a field that can cause capacitive and inductive coupling.
- Device located at a distance from a radiation source: devices in the vicinity of an electrical system may be affected by far-field interactions.
Wave Theory
An electromagnetic field source generates electric and magnetic components. The relationship between them depends on the type of source and the distance. The ratio of these fields allows calculating the wave impedance (Z).
Low-impedance sources mainly generate magnetic fields, while high-impedance sources generate electric fields.
Shielding
When a wave encounters an obstacle, part of its energy is reflected, part penetrates the object, and part is absorbed (e.g., converted into heat or internal currents). The greater the impedance difference between the wave and the object, the more energy is reflected. Magnetic fields are harder to shield, so the most effective method is wave reflection.
